MINUSTAH: Business as Usual

The history of Haiti, one of the most impoverished countries of the western hemisphere, has been plagued by civil riots, coup d’état, insecurity, government instability, corrupted leaders, etc. since its inception in January 1804 as the first Black independent country.

Several worlds’ greatest countries such as France, Canada, the United States, etc had intervened either diplomatically through peacekeeping missions or manun military through occupations in order to restore peace in the country.

Currently, especially since 1 June 2004 based on Resolution 1542, the United Nations (UN) has been present in Haiti through a civilian-military force called the United Nations Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH) whose mission is to promote and protect human rights and to hold Haitian governments accountable for human rights abuses.

This paper describes MINUSTAH’s presence in Haiti is causing the country more harm than good when it comes to protecting and respecting Haiti’s basic human rights. It shows social justice and ethical issues by both UN and MINUSTAH members.
